Dan Penrod
Penrod Sensei demonstrated principles based
on yokomen uchi kaiten nage with the emphasis on the line of uke's spine,
introducing such as gyaku ude-garami (Kimura),
ude-garami, ude hishigi te gatame and a sankyo variation on the spine.
Spiros Koyanis
Koyanis Sensei talked about maai (distance
relationship), demonstrated rowing exercise (tori-fune) and it's relationship to
receiving uke's attack and projecting uke in a way that maintains this maai.
Craig Fife
Fife Sensei demonstrated tanto (knife)
techniques that showed the relationship between tanto techniques and empty hand
techniques. He talked about the importance of light touch and sensitivity.
"I like to practice empty hand techniques as though I had a weapon and weapon
techniques as though empty hand." Principles of sankyo, kotegaeshi and
irimi were presented.
Aki Fleschler
Fleschler Sensei demonstrated empt-hand techniques with
tanto in hand to emphasize the relationship of empty-hand (tai-jutsu) to tanto
waza. He showed techniques with principles of ikkyo, nikyo, and
iriminage to name a few.
Michael Selin
Selin Sensei demonstrated iaido cutting
movement, focusing on the relationship between nage and uke in regard to timing
and space (deai and maai). The focus was on the taisabaki, moving kote
(wrist cuts) and kesa giri (diagonal cuts). He also reflected on the
importance of silent practice to maintain zanshin (lingering spirit and
awareness).
Ty Barker
Barker Sensei focused on ikkyo movement.
He demonstrated principles of staying connected to uke even as uke recovers and
taking the center and balance back again. Following this idea he showed
various henka waza (fixing) and kaeshi waza (reversal) movements resulting in
interesting variations.
